Legal Assistant – Guyana Revenue Authority
Job Purpose
Provide clerical support to the Legal Officer by conducting research and analysis, assembling case materials, and preparing legal documents, reports, and memoranda for the smooth flow of court cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Requesting updates, examining, and organizing the evidence and other legal documents on Court matters from other departments within the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) for the Enforcement Officers and Attorneys, to ensure they have the most recent body of information and knowledge before instituting actions on the relevant cases.
- Updating and maintaining records of reports and legal documents that are dispatched out of the Department for accountability purposes.
- Answering phone calls and transferring same to the appropriate personnel.
- Updating and maintaining the Legal Officers’ diary with appointments, court dates, and meetings, to ensure the schedules are accurate to avoid double booking.
- Supporting the Enforcement Officers to attain the rulings of the court on behalf of GRA by handling exhibits and taking notes to keep an accurate account of all matters.
- Composing Writs, Court Orders, letters, and other memoranda on behalf of the Guyana Revenue Authority to notify defaulting taxpayers of the intentions to institute legal actions against them.
- Filing Legal documents with the Court, to ensure defaulting taxpayers receive Notices of their outstanding Liability.
- Liaising and providing status updates for the preparation of weekly, monthly, and yearly production reports.
- Any other related duties assigned.
Requirements
- Diploma in Law, Accounting, Public/Business Management, or any equivalent qualification with a minimum of three to five (3-5) years relevant experience.
- Knowledge of the mission, mandate, goals, and objectives of the Guyana Revenue Authority.
- Knowledge of the Tax Acts and Policies administered by the GRA
- Knowledge of Court documents.
- Knowledge of Summons and 44/101 Certificates and Writs/Orders.
- Knowledge of PC Applications.
- Ability to prioritize tasks to meet conflicting timelines.
- Organizational and Time Management skills.
- Integrity, accountability, professionalism, and mutual respect.
