Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a cashier and driver at a pharmacy in Guyana?
Most employers expect at least a CSEC certificate with passes in Mathematics and English, along with basic numeracy and customer service skills. For the driving component, you must hold a valid Guyanese driver's licence appropriate for the vehicle class, and some employers prefer drivers with several years of experience. A clean police clearance is often required since you may handle cash and deliveries.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You would operate the cash register, process payments, issue receipts, and assist customers at the counter. Driving duties usually include delivering medications or supplies to customers and other branches, maintaining the vehicle, and keeping delivery records. You may also help with stock counting, shelf restocking, and general store upkeep.
What work culture and expectations should I be aware of in Guyana?
Pharmacies in Guyana often operate six days a week with extended hours, so punctuality and reliability are highly valued. Employers expect courteous service, honesty with cash handling, and flexibility to cover shifts when needed. Building trust with your employer is important, as many roles are long-term and word-of-mouth reputation matters locally.
What career growth can I expect from a cashier and driver position?
With experience, you could progress to senior cashier, inventory supervisor, or pharmacy assistant roles, especially if you pursue further training in pharmaceutical dispensing. Strong drivers may move into logistics coordination or fleet supervision. Demonstrating reliability and willingness to learn often leads to internal promotions in retail settings.
What benefits are typically offered for this type of role in Guyana?
Benefits vary by employer but commonly include paid annual leave, sick leave as required under Guyana's labour laws, and NIS (National Insurance Scheme) contributions. You can apply by submitting a written application with your CV directly to the pharmacy, responding to newspaper ads like those in the Stabroek News or Kaieteur News classifieds, or through Facebook job groups popular in Guyana. Employers look for honesty, a valid driver's licence, good communication skills, and references from previous employers. Dress neatly and bring copies of your certificates and police clearance to interviews.
